Have you listened to S1E1 Movie Genres ?We cover a lot of ground1 . At 19 minute and 39 second we dropped a question asking the audience what it means to “sleep with the fishes” in the cult classic Italian mobster movie The Godfather from 1972. Let’s discuss that today and review some other aspects of the episode.
Sleep with the fishes 不只來自電影
The idiom sleep with the fishes was popularized in the 1970s in Mario Puzo's novel and movie, The Godfather: “It's a Sicilian message. It means Luca Brasi sleeps with the fishes.” The expression sleep with the fishes may go back much farther. Edmund Spencer used the phrase in the 1830s. -Grammarist
「與魚共眠」這個說法因為20世紀1970年代馬里奧·普佐(Mario Puzo)的小說和電影《教父》而紅起來:「這是西西里島式的訊息,意味著盧卡·布拉西與魚共眠了。(已死)」此說法也可能可以追溯到更早的時候,在1830年代埃德蒙·斯賓塞(Edmund Spence)使用過這個說詞。- 來自Grammarist
